Tristan D. - Member Spotlight July 2023

How did you discover CrossFit?

CrossFit discovered me one day at the beach and said, “whoa bro, dope biceps! You should come to a place where working out shirtless is acceptable!”

First fire academy in 2013. All of our pre-drill ground fitness was run by a few guys that owned a gym in Windsor at the time.

What draws you to DeNovo CrossFit?

I live in an RV on canal street and do a lot of “business” in the motels off mulberry. So I’m in the area a lot.

I initially liked the facility and equipment but I stuck around for the overall attitude and professionalism of the space created by the coaches and members.

What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment in CrossFit and in life?

I qualified for the games this year under the alias Rich Deboning

Honestly, I dunno. Hopefully I haven’t hit it yet!

What athlete/s at DeNovo inspire you to be the best version of yourself each and every day?

Greg. He’s a stellar example of who not to be.

I try my best not to compare myself to anyone including my younger self so I’m just happy to show up and move around with my friends and family at 9:15

What is your pet peeve?

Peeve? My dog's name is Shiner… And he’s the best.

What/who inspires you?

Gainz. Duh.

Favorite joke.

$&#^ @“**# &$*#+ $&&@%#?

$&*%€

What advice would you have for anyone who is nervous to join DeNovo?

Strong people are harder to kill.

What do you enjoy doing outside of CrossFit, both for fun and professionally?

When my back isn’t being a real Cee U Next Tuesday, I like to snowboard and surf. Fly fishing rules but don’t disrespect my water with a spin rod. Drinkin beers on patios with friends. Hitting very old motorcycles with wrenches and acting like I know what I’m doing.

If we were sitting here one year from now, what would we be celebrating together?

At the rate I’m going, we’ll be celebrating the fact that I can sit in a chair without assistance.

Favorite CrossFit movement?

Bench.

It’s still CrossFit. I’ll fight you about it.

What are you currently reading?

This stupid questionnaire.

What are you thankful for?

My wife, my dog and my ‘58 Harley.

What the coaches have to say about Tristan:

Ohhhhhh Tristan. You are one of the best class clowns out there, and are also one of the kindest, yet most inappropriate dudes I know. I love it. Thank you for bringing tons of laughter, energy and fun to classes. I'm so proud of the progress you have made, even though it might not seem like a ton with your back issues still very much present. What inspires me is that you continue to choose to show up, put in work and maintain your health while still being able to push yourself in ways that are possible. I think of the 200m running interval workout, Nicole and surprising yourself by pulling the barbell from the ground for the first time in a year, and more. This is such a great representation of your character, your willingness to TRY, your willingness to put excuses aside, and your trust in us coaches to support you in continuing to be able to get work done at the gym with your buddies. I love that you partake in DeNovo events (softball most recently!), help us be awesome (Open designs), and try things many people won't (cold plunge brrrrrr!) and also so appreciate your outlook on life and not taking yourself too seriously :) Thank you for being wholeheartedly you; a wild, crazy and wonderfully ridiculous person who we just adore.

-Coach Jenny

Congrats Tristan for being our July Member Spotlight! You have such a positive attitude and you make class fun and interesting based on the things you say. Never a dull moment when Tristan is in class! You are very approachable and help us to be a welcoming and approachable gym. As you have worked through your back injury stuff, you have not allowed that to stop you from being consistent. You come in and do what you are able to do and that is far better than not doing anything. You set a great example to others that no matter what is going on, getting into the gym will be better than not because we will make sure you still get a workout based on what you are able to do. It has also been fun to see your tattoo collection grow since I've known you! Thanks for being you and we are so glad you are a part of the DeNovo community!

-Coach Jorine

Tristan! Congratulations on being our member spotlight! It is so well deserved. You work hard and are committed to your health despite having challenges with your back. You continuously show up, do what you can and scale appropriately. You also receive coaching and feedback great and are very receptive to scaling options. Thank you for all of your hard work on the logo for the Open. You went above and beyond helping us with that process. I appreciate the fun attitude you bring to every class and you always have a smile on your face. Thank you for being awesome!

-Coach Nikki

Tristan! Where do I even start? You are one of the silliest people in the gym and possibly the most inappropriate. You make us all laugh constantly, and I love that you never take anything too seriously. You help make DeNovo approachable and friendly! I am proud of you for making it to the gym so much this month and coming all throughout your back stuff. You have had such a positive attitude about having to modify workouts and continue to show up for yourself and others. And I can't NOT mention the ENORMOUS impact you've had on my own family. My kids LOVE you and obviously Greg has some weird, intense infatuation with you as well, which has had a questionable impact on our marriage. But honestly, you've been a wonderful encourager and inspiration to Greg (and the kids and I) these past few years which started in the gym but spilled over into our careers and poured into our everyday lives. My favorite thing about you isn't your humor, but actually the fervent loyalty you show to your friends and family. I also appreciate how much you embarrass Katie when you want to share a little too much of your tattoos 😉, that you are always down to wear the goofiest of costumes, that you won't do anything you don't want to do or agree with, your love of Mexican food and margaritas, and the fact that you probably got nauseous or rolled your eyes a bunch reading this paragraph.  Congrats Pistan! I mean, Trista!
