🍎 Fruit doesn’t have too much sugar (and other myths you may believe)

If you click on the wrong post in any social media feed, you will be pulled into a rabbit hole of food misery and fear-mongering.

Let’s de-bunk some myths floating around on social media.

🍌 MYTH: Fruit has too much sugar.

>> No it doesn’t! 80% of Americans aren’t even eating the recommended amounts. How is it causing our chronic disease epidemic if few people are eating it?

🥦 MYTH: Veggies are better than fruit.

>> Incorrect! It depends on which nutrient you are talking about, and what’s your relative serving size. Blueberries have more Vitamin K and carrots more Vitamin A per 100g. Or a typical banana has more Vitamin B6 than kale. Diversity across plant matter is best.

🥔 MYTH: Potatoes have too many carbs.

>> Wrong again. Yes, Americans need to cut back on French fries and chips, but not oven baked potatoes. Potatoes are some of the most satisfying foods: you’re full for hours! Plus you’ll also get a good whack of Vitamin C, potassium, VitaminB6, folate, and more.

Here’s the truth:

Social media rewards those who get attention, which is often not the same as those who are accurate. Saying something completely wrong is a GREAT way to get clicks online.

If you need to be convinced we aren’t eating too much fruit or oven baked potatoes, take a look at your options anytime you are quite literally… anywhere.

Gas stations, drug stores, home goods stores, sporting goods stores, craft stores, electronics stores, shipping stores, discount clothing stores, the food lining grocery store checkouts, the food in office bowls or next to the teller at the bank….

It’s all the processed stuff! And no surprise, we are eating too much of it (>60% of our calories come from processed foods!!).

Ditch the nonsense on social media, and start enjoying some freedom around these nutritious whole foods with our #800gChallenge coming up in the New Year!
