Jamie R. - Member Spotlight April 2023

How did you discover CrossFit?

My sister started CrossFit many, many years ago.  She was completely committed to the practice and talked about it all the time. Then, Rod started CrossFit at Miramont and was equally committed. At that time I was running quite a bit with friends but could definitely feel the deficits in my fitness. In November of 2014 I joined Miramont with Rod.

What draws you to DeNovo CrossFit?

The Coaches! 100%

What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment in CrossFit and in life?

Sticking with it… I usually tire of things after a few years. With the exception of the “Covid Shutdown” time period, I’ve been “CrossFitting” since 2014. The variety of workouts and having someone tell me what to do are  game changers for me and my fitness journey!

What athlete/s at DeNovo inspire you to be the best version of yourself each and every day?

Rod! There are times when I feel myself getting distracted but Rod continues to get up and go and that keeps me in it!

What is your pet peeve?

You ask that as though I have ONE…  I have many! Too many to list, but one at the top of my list at the gym is when people don’t put Kettlebells, Dumbbells and Wall Balls away properly. Everything is marked so nicely!  It shouldn’t be that hard.

What/who inspires you?

Everyone is inspirational when you really look at it.  We all have things we’re good at and we all have things we struggle with.  People who are the most vulnerable but show up and do the hard work are the most inspirational!

Favorite joke.

I frequently hear funny jokes and promise myself to commit them to memory, but then I promptly forget them. However, Rod reminded me I have a “very corny Knock, Knock joke,” so here it is:

Knock, Knock….

Who’s there?

Impatient Cow.

Impatient C…

MOO!

What advice would you have for anyone who is nervous to join DeNovo?

Feeling nervous is completely natural… do It anyway! You won’t be sorry.

What do you enjoy doing outside of CrossFit, both for fun and professionally?

Riding horses, playing on the water & spending time with friends and family.

If we were sitting here one year from now, what would we be celebrating together?

Tomorrow is never promised and I never like to wish time away, so I’d say just all being together, happy and healthy a year from now is worth celebrating.

Favorite CrossFit movement?

Well, it’s only taken 9 years, but I feel like I’m kinda getting the hang of toes-to-bar and pull-ups. I can’t link them of course, but singles are doable.

What are you currently reading?
I can’t sit down and read. If I do, I fall asleep, but I do like to “listen” to books while I’m out in the barn. Margaret Mizushima is a local mystery writer. Her TimberCreek K-9 series is entertaining and easy to listen to. I can get distracted and when I come back to paying attention, I still know what’s going on which is big for me. My attention span is very, very short!

What are you thankful for? My life!

I have the most amazing people surrounding me, starting with Rod.  They love and support me and I am so very grateful! Every day when I wake up, I can hardly believe this is my life…

What the coaches have to say about Jamie:

Yay Jamie! I so appreciate your kind and humble heart (maybe too humble at times 😉) and just love having you and Rod at the gym. It has been soooooo fun to watch you step outside of your comfort zone this past year doing overhead squats, pull-ups, and even the Open! I love that you hang out after class to chat with friends and enjoy the space. You are such a warm and friendly presence in class and I really appreciate that I can count on you to laugh at my silly jokes. It was awesome to be able to do the blood drive in honor of your dad, Rex, last year and being exposed to that story reminded us of how generous and loving you and your family are. You've also been through a lot of tough stuff this year and your grace and positivity through it all has been inspiring. I'm so excited to see how much you will grow over this next year and appreciate all of your support. We love you! - Coach Jenny

Yay Jamie! Congrats on being our May Member Spotlight. You always have a smile on your face and you are so friendly to anyone who is in class with you. I appreciate that you are always encouraging others in class and being a positive person with great energy. I am so so proud of you for choosing to get wayyyy outside of your comfort zone by signing up for the open this year as that has been something that you were not willing to do in years past and you did it and you were such an inspiration to others to make that choice to step outside of your comfort zone. (the super cute open tank top helped!) Thank you for being a part of the DeNovo family and helping us to be the welcoming gym that we strive to be! - Coach Jorine

Jamie, I’m always so in awe of you. Thank you for being such an inspiration to me; your kindness, welcoming personality, selflessness, humility and generosity are all things that I love about you. You make me want to be the best version of myself. I also love how you champion Rod and are his biggest cheerleader -- I admire that so much. Thank you for being such a beautiful presence at DeNovo and always putting a smile on our faces! You show up early and stay late and truly care about all of those around you. You love your family and your animals lots and take such good care of them. You also have the cutest little dog ever. ;) I’m excited for you to share a little bit of your story! Thank you for being so committed & loyal to DeNovo, being a part of our events, and for being such an inspiration to our community. We love you! - Coach Paige

Jamie! Congratulations on being our member spotlight! I have loved getting to know you and Rod this past year. I love your love for horses and riding. I know you’re one badass cowgirl! You were so fun to watch during the Open and it was awesome to see you push so hard during 23.3. I don’t think you stopped once to rest! Thank you for letting me judge you. I appreciate how hard you work and your dedication to getting better and being as healthy as you can. It was also really fun to see you judging another athlete and jumping right in when needed. I was impressed how you and Rod were still able to get the Open workouts done even when traveling to Hawaii. I am so glad you are both part of DeNovo and I am excited for what 2023 holds for you! - Coach Nikki
